Blended families have become more and more common in today’s society. There are quite a few children that are finding themselves spending time in two different households and often with one parent more than the other. The following are some tips to help you stay close with your child even though you are not able to spend a lot of time together.
You could write letters or emails to each other. You could buy a box of envelopes and put stamps on each one along with your address. This would make it very easy for your child, all they would need to do is draw a picture or write you a letter and put it in one of the self addressed stamped envelopes that you gave them.
Sending care packages is another great way to let your child know that you are thinking of them. You can stick little reminders of fun things that you do together, like pictures or ticket stubs from a favorite movie theater. Also you can add some of their favorite candy or a fun toy as a surprise.
Phone calls are always a great way to keep in touch with your child when they are not with you but if that is not be possible there are a couple alternatives. If both households have internet access you could chat by webcam. You both would get to see each other and it would be a fairly simple way to communicate with one other. You might also want to consider making a video tape to send to your child. You could simple make a video tape of what is going on around your household to help your child not feel left out while they are not with you.
So while being a blended family can be hard, it is not impossible to find some truly creative ways to let your kids now that you care and are thinking about them when they are not with you.
